Noah Wildlife Fund

In response to the biodiversity loss crisis in the Amazon rainforest, the Noah Project aimed to attract more users and raise funds to put in real efforts for environmental conservation. The design seeks to reconnect urban citizens to wildlife to increase their ecological awareness and biospheric value and ultimately encourage them to contribute to conservation.

About the Project

Since 1970, wildlife populations in Latin America and the Caribbean have declined by an average of 94%. This region contains one of the world's most important biodiversity ecosystems — the Amazon rainforest. A properly functioning Amazon can sequester carbon to help the rising temperature stay within 1.5 degrees Celsius. Once biodiversity and environmental losses in the Amazon reach 20%–25%, the rainforest will cease to function. According to the Brazilian government, if this rate continues, the Amazon forest will reach a tipping point within the next decade.

Biodiversity Loss and Deforestation

Biodiversity encompasses all varieties of flora and fauna, their habitats, and genetic diversities within and between species. Our planet is home to approximately 8.7 million species, with tropical zones housing the majority of biodiversity. Yet, mankind demolishes tropical rainforests to accommodate the escalating global populace. Research indicates that over 90% of biodiversity reduction is associated with the extraction and refinement of natural assets. The reduction scale fluctuates between regions and species; Latin America has seen the most significant regional decrease in typical population density (94%), whereas global freshwater species populations have borne the brunt of the overall decrease (83%).

People Living in Cities are Disconnected From Nature

In metropolitan areas, humans have fully transformed nature into artificial infrastructure. The study discovered a gap between city dwellers' environmental awareness and behaviors. This disconnect is mainly caused by city dwellers' inability to imagine their actions’ impact on distant natural environments.

Case Study: New York City

Taking New York City as a case study, we can see that the city's infrastructure maintains almost no green and natural environment.

Urban Citizens' Extinction of Experience with Nature

With over 70% of the global human population predicted to live in cities within 30 years (WHO, 2016a), opportunities for people to interact with nature have declined over the past century. Conservation attitudes and behaviors largely depend on experiences with nature, and this “extinction of experience” (EOE) threatens biodiversity conservation. According to research, up to 72% of NYC citizens lack nature experience in their lives. In urban environments, exposure to nature is more complex and versatile than often portrayed.

Conclusion

The Noah Project serves as a progressive solution to the urgent issue of biodiversity loss in the Amazon rainforest, with its core aim of connecting city residents and wildlife via technology-aided explorations of nature. Capitalizing on shocking data on species dwindling and habitat loss, the project works to inspire a critical perception of urgency and a high biospheric value among individuals. Through the utilization of an engaging AR experience, the project motivates urban inhabitants to participate in and support conservation initiatives, cultivating a globally conscious and pro-active environmental community. This endeavor addresses not only the pressing requirement for heightened environmental responsibility, but also symbolizes a futuristic strategy for securing our planet's biodiversity for coming generations.
